I paint because it is completely engaging and difficult.  It requires me to learn new things all the time.  When the work is going well, I am deep in concentration and one with my materials, and I feel productive and useful.

For many years, I have painted in the woods, to express to the viewer the emotions and sensations I feel in the midst of the forest.  My very American point of view means that I deeply value wilderness, untouched by human imprint.  Starting as a realist, I have developed new approaches, both realist and abstract.  Currently I am working with glitter, which both flattens the picture plane and enlivens the light reflecting from the painting.  Glitter suggests the tiny, overall movements that are present in nature.  It is also almost unphotographable, which is a virtue in fine art!

I was diagnosed with indolent lymphoma in 2013.  I wanted to be able to visualize it, so I pulled some images from the internet and asked my hematologist about them.  From him, I learned which cells were lymphoma, which were blood cells, which were bone cells, and which were fat cells.  At first, I painted from the actual photographs of my disease.  Now I  have progressed to combining, deconstructing, and changing the colors, using glitter and linoleum block printing.
